Astrid has a science, humanities and education background. Her current research interests include building cross-cultural and intercultural communicative environments with particular emphasis on Web-based communication, for which she has received several awards. Astrid has also published nationally and internationally on intercultural and ethical issues related to emerging technologies and their applications, including establishing appropriate ethical frameworks, and integrating social and ethical dimensions into discourse on scientific development and risk. Astrid has provided input or advice on human cloning to the Australian Legislative Review Committee and the Australian National Health & Medical Research Council, on gene technology regulation to the Australian Biotechnology Advisory Council, and on global ethical issues related to food security, genetically modified foods and human health to the World Health Organization in Geneva.

Astrid is the co-director of Multimedia Australia Pty Ltd (ACN 096 830 394) and a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
