Born in Italy, Zafferana Etnea (Catania), she graduated in 1984 at La Trobe University with a thesis on the verse of Michelangelo Buonarroti. She has been teaching Italian and Italian culture at University level since 1986 at La Trobe University, Melbourne University, Auckland University and Monash University. In 1993 she completed her MA with a thesis on Francesco Colonna’s Hypnerotomachia Poliphili and the dream sequence in Renaissance literature.
Research interests
Ms Cavallaro has specialised in Renaissance Literature but her literary interests have always been eclectic. Her current interests are Italian Women writers since the Renaissance especially the works of courtesan-poets Veronica Franco, Tullia d'Aragona and the poet/musician Gaspara Stampa. She is also interested in 20th Century Italian novel with particular emphasis on contemporary Sicilian writers and on the giallisti -"writers" of thrillers who follow the model of Leonardo Sciascia.
Coordinator of Italian 200, Ms Cavallaro teaches Renaissance Poetry, Francesco Petrarca Italo Calvino for Italian 300 and Anna Banti, Dacia Maraini in "Modern Italian Novel - Italian 310.
