Biography

Dr Yvonne Griggs joined the University of New England in 2013 as a Lecturer in Media and Communications. Prior to this, she was a Senior Lecturer in English at De Montfort University where she was an active research member of the university's Centre for Adaptations, and recipient of the Vice Chancellor's Distinguished Teaching Award (2011).

Yvonne’s research areas include Adaptation Theory, the Adaptation of Literature to Screen, TV Adaptations, Shakespeare on Screen, and Screenwriting. She has an established publication record in the field of Adaptation Studies: her most recent outputs include her latest monograph titled The Bloomsbury Introduction to Adaptation Studies: Adapting the Canon in film, TV, Novels and Popular Culture (2016); "Writing for the Movies: Writing and Screening Atonement," (in A Companion to Literature, Film, and Adaptation); King Lear on Screen (monograph published by Methuen, 2009); and articles in a number of international peer-reviewed journals (Adaptation, The Journal of Adaptation in Film and Performance, Literature/Film Quarterly). Her most recent screenplay focuses on the lives of the 'fallen' women of Charles Dickens' Urania Cottage and their pursuit of new, sin-free lives in the Empire's colonial outposts. Her forthcoming publications include “Reconfiguring Urban Landscapes: the Global Spread of Nordic Noir TV” (in The Routledge Companion to Adaptation Studies, Feb. 2017); “My Memory of Myself: An Angel at my Table as Biopic” (in A Companion to the Biopic, Wiley Blackwell, 2018); and her latest monograph, Adaptable TV: Rewiring the Text (Palgrave Macmillan, 2018). 

Dr Griggs is interested in supervising postgraduate students whose research areas include any of the above; her current research focuses in particular on TV and adaptation, and Nordic Noir on screen. She is currently principal supervisor on two PhD projects related to Television Studies and Creative Practice:

  • Exploring female representation and feminist politics of the sexualised millennial woman in Broad City and Girls, Bridgette Glover, APA scholar
  • The Ghost Squad (YAF Novel) and Exploring the undiscovered country: the theme of the afterlife in contemporary YA speculative fiction (Exegesis), author, Sophie Masson, APA scholar
