A/Prof Leonel Alvarado

Biography

Growing up in the Mayan region of Honduran has been an essential part of my life, more so now that I live in Australasia, since our cultures share a colonial past and an indigenous heritage. Before moving here, in 2002, I spent eight years as a postgraduate student and teacher of Spanish language and Latin American literature and culture in the US. My teaching career began in Honduras, in April of 1989 - I don't remember the day, only the time (my first class was at 7am!) and the fact that I was so excited and nervous that I didn't follow my lesson plan; the moral of the story is that I have been confusing students ever since!

Research Interests

I am currently conducting research on issues of nationalism, music, immigration and identity through the national anthems of Central America. I am also interested in exploring how Latin America has been seen and invented by European, North American and Australasian travel writers. My scholarly research feeds into my poetry –in my most recent books I have written about the impact of displacement, immigration and violence from biblical, historical and contemporary points of views.
