Biography

Kiyomi is a lecturer in the School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. She was awarded a Bachelor of Arts (English and American literature) at Keio University in Tokyo, a Graduate Diploma in Education (Japanese and ESL) and a Master of Education (TESOL) at UNE, and a PhD (Japanese applied linguistics) at Monash University. Before joining the Discipline of Japanese at UNE, she taught Japanese and ESL/EFL at the secondary and tertiary levels in Australia and Japan and worked as a freelance translator (English - Japanese) for various companies including a publisher in Tokyo.

Kiyomi has developed and taught Japanese language, sociolinguistic and cultural units at the 200 - 500 levels for years and successfully supervised international PhD candidates. She conducts research in the area of applied linguistics including first and second language socialisation, second language acquisition and discourse analysis. She has also been coordinating the Japanese exchange program with UNE's partners in Japan (Daito Bunka, Kanazawa, Chubu, Doshisha and Kagoshima) and acts as the contact person for communications with the five Japanese universities. In her spare time, she enjoys playing the piano, listening to jazz, bushwalking and watching birds.
