Our Mission:
Sport UNE is passionate about offering opportunities for all to participate in an unparalleled range of sport and fitness activities using our excellent facilities to provide a pathway to a healthier lifestyle.
Sport, physical recreation and fitness programs provided by Sport UNE play a significant role in the development of the social and cultural life at UNE. Sport UNE contributes substantially to the health and wellbeing of the University and the regional Armidale community through leadership in encouraging regular participation in sport and physical recreation, and the maintenance of a diverse range of high quality sporting, fitness, and recreation facilities.
Sport UNE owes an enormous debt of gratitude to its honorary office bearers and full-time staff members whose untiring and unselfish efforts have guided Sport UNE through its seven decades of operation. From modest beginnings in 1938, Sport UNE today provides University sports facilities which are amongst the finest in the country, has developed an extensive community recreation program, and boasts participation rates which are amongst the highest of any Australian University.
Sport UNE's extensive facilities are also recognised as being amongst the finest in All Australian Universities. They include:
- Heated indoor 25m, 6 lane pool,
- 6 squash courts,
- 6 tennis courts (3 synthetic grass, 3 plexipave),
- Modern weights gym featuring pin loaded and free weights, as well as a fully equipped Cardio Zone,
- Climbing wall,
- The New England Hockey Centre (controlled by Hockey New England),
- Indoor stadium (housing netball, basketball, volleyball, badminton, etc),
- Group Fitness rooms and RPM room,
- Meeting rooms,
- Balcony Lounge,
- Extensive changeroom facilities, and
- 15 hectares of playing fields incorporating:
- 4 rugby fields,
- 4 soccer fields,
- Bellevue cricket ground (turf wicket) and 4 synthetic cricket wickets,
- 2 plexipave outdoor netball courts,
- 1 AFL ground,
- Brian Seppelt Playing Field (touch football and softball facilities),
- BBQ and picnic facilities,
- Extensive carparks,
- Bellevue Pavilion, and
- Consett Davis amenities block.
Finally, in achieving operational success and consumer satisfaction, Sport UNE is committed to:
- Adding value to the educational experience of our Student members through the development of their 'life skills' via Club and Committee involvement and participating in Sports Administration, Coaching, Refereeing and other Accreditation courses.
- The development of our Sports Clubs and their representation of the University in the region's highest level competitions.
- Working closely with the local community to develop sports facilities and programs that benefit the entire New England community.
- Encouraging our talented athletes to achieve excellence in performance.
- Facilitating participation in a wide range of sport, fitness, and physical recreation activities by our members.
- Developing our facilities, upgrading equipment, and maintaining our facilities to the highest possible standards.
- Efficiently managing the use of our facilities.
- Working with UNE to develop facilities for the conduct of Physical Education and teaching programs which enable Sport UNE to access these facilities outside class times.
