Smart Farm

Australia’s national broadband network (NBN) is coming together, bit by bit. What will the NBN mean to rural Australia? Whilst the subject of much debate, it is universally recognised that the positive impacts will include supporting the sustainability and growth of (decentralised and centralised) regional businesses and providing better access to services for rural communities (such as education and health and social support).

But what of farming?

Healthy and happy farming families, operating viable farming enterprises is a key ingredient of rural and regional Australia. After all, viable farms are cornerstones to viable rural communities!  Australia’s NBN IS going to make a real, positive difference to the business and lifestyle of farming; through what we call ‘SMART Farming’.

The University of New England is committed to showing Australians how a national broadband network can make a real difference to farming and the training of our future farmers. Working with valued partners CSIRO, a national network of collaborating farmers and R&D organisations (including the CRC for Spatial Information), and building on our international leadership in Rural and Environmental Science education, Applied Sciences, Precision Agriculture research and development, and our commitment to research-led teaching, we are transforming a typical Australian farm into Australia’s first, NBN-enabled SMART Farm.
