SiMERR National Centre co-hosted the first International Symosium for Innovation on Rural Education (ISFIRE), February 11th - 14th, 2009. ISFIRE emphasised the obligation of the global education community towards influencing policy aimed at delivering equitable and socially just outcomes for rural students. Importantly, ISFIRE offered an international forum for sharing research findings, innovative ideas and evaluated approaches linked to positive, practical action. |

Some of Australia's finest mathematics teachers were welcomed to UNE on Monday, January 7, as they embarked on the inaugural Australian Government Summer School for Teachers of Mathematics, hosted by SiMERR National Centre.
The non-stop 10-day program included two major presentations a day by top ranking speakers from the UK, New Zealand and Australia. Speakers represented relevant stakeholders, including academia, the teaching profession itself and industry, and covered topics as diverse as the latest developments in neuroscience to discussions of assessment methods.

The 2007 National Summit showcased selected SiMERR projects from across Australia and provided participants with the opportunity to engage in small group discussion about relevant issues. The program focused on the themes of Enhancing Student Learning; Transforming Pedagogy; and Nurturing Professional Learning, which encapsulate the mission of the National Centre of Science, Information and Communication Technology and Mathematics Education for Rural and Regional Australia (SiMERR).
The 2007 Narrowing the Gap conference brought together professionals whose core business is to address the student achievement gap that exists in our current schooling systems. Whether due to student diversity issues, learning difficulties or geographical factors, it is increasingly important to address educational disadvantage through effective intervention research and collaborative approaches to improving student performance.

2005
A national meeting of educators in November 2005 was the next big step in a multi-million-dollar campaign to improve educational outcomes in mathematics, science and computing subjects for students in rural and regional Australia. The meeting was the first of its kind since the founding, at The University of New England in 2004, of the National Centre of Science, Information and Communication Technology, and Mathematics Education for Rural and Regional Australia (SiMERR Australia).
