Study Exchange Program
The Faculty of The Sciences strongly supports the educational and personal enhancement opportunities in the UNE Study Abroad Program. The Faculty Office will provide any advice or support necessary for students to participate in the Program.
Before Applying
Contact the Faculty Office for procedures on obtaining academic advice on the implications for your degree candidature.
These include, among others:
- obtaining prior approval for overseas units;
- prerequisites and corequisites for remaining UNE units;
- degree rules/policies;
- enrolment, fees and HECS while overseas;
- Youth Allowance/Austudy; and
- obtaining credit for overseas units on return.
You will often find yourself referred to your Course Coordinator in relation to the effect of your proposed overseas study program on your subsequent UNE enrolment.
It is your responsibility to:
- provide unit descriptions in good time for advice on potential credit to be sought;
- make personal arrangements for the payment of your UNE liabilities (GSF, HECS etc.) whilst overseas; and
- ensure that your details and arrangements are in place and recorded before you depart.
The UNE International Office will provide you with advice and support on visa, travel requirements, etc.
Recommended Study Abroad Candidature Zones
| BAgr | - | during 2nd year |
| BCompSc | - | during 2nd year |
| BEnvSc | - | during 2nd year |
| BNatRes | - | during 2nd or 3rd year |
| BRurSc | - | during 2nd or 3rd year |
| BSc | - | during 2nd year |
The reason for these zones is to minimise problems meeting individual degree rules and/or policies for your eventual graduation. For example, BSc students are required to complete 36 credit points in Group 3 units from UNE (that is, 300-level equivalent units from another university will not count towards this minimum requirement) - this might mean you will take longer than 3 or 4 years to complete your degree.
If you are undertaking a double degree program such as BCompSc/LLB, BNatRes/BUrbRegPlan etc., you must obtain individual advice. Due to professional accreditation requirements by various professions, study abroad may not attract credit towards your degree because that accrediting body requires UNE units.
On Arrival Overseas
Ensure that you have a contact address (an email address is particularly recommended) recorded with your home in Australia and with the University.
If you vary the units that you agreed before you left and you do not have approval to do the revised selection of overseas units, you must contact the Student Centre immediately with the new unit descriptions so that an assessment can be made and appropriate advice be given. If you do not have specific approval you run the risk of having some or all of your overseas study disallowed for your UNE degree (although you may be willing to accept this simply because you are broadening your experience not your degree).
Before Returning
- You must make arrangements for your results (if they were unavailable) to be sent to you so that you have evidence of your success and so that the overseas units can be recorded on your UNE academic record/transcript.
On Returning
- Call at the Student Centre to ensure that your enrolment has been recorded for the semester;
- Present your overseas results for the recording of your advanced standing;
- Call on your Course Coordinator to check your degree progress and enrolment pattern; and
- The Faculty encourages Study Exchange students to share their experiences with their colleagues - if you would be interested in talking to other potential Study Exchange students, or helping to host students from your overseas university who are coming to UNE, please contact the International Office.
