Cross-Institutional and Non-Award Study Policy - Non-UNE Students

This is defined as enrolment in UNE units which are to be credited towards a course being taken at another university. UNE welcomes cross-institutional enrolment in its units, both internal and external.

Approval from the Home Institution

To be classified as a cross-institutional student the Student Centre must have:

  • Written confirmation in the form of a letter of authority that your home university is prepared to accept the UNE unit(s) towards your course.
  • The letter must name the unit or units, which have been approved. To change any units, a new letter of authority must be provided. You should approach your appropriate academic or administrative office with details of the UNE units in which you wish to seek enrolment.
  • Ideally, the letter of authority from the home university should arrive with the UNE Enrolment Registration Form. If the letter of authority has not been included, in some circumstances provisional enrolment may be granted pending the arrival of the letter. You will be given a deadline by which it must be received and if the letter has not arrived by the deadline the Student Centre may have to cancel your enrolment or transfer the enrolment to a non-degree basis for which a fee of $840 per unit will be charged.

NOTE: The Faculty of the Sciences will not check that you have the appropriate background knowledge to complete the unit or units you nominate nor can the Faculty provide advice on the suitability of particular units for your degree at your home institution. It is your responsibility to discuss these issues with appropriate staff at your home institution.

Application to UNE

Students applying for enrolment as cross-institutional students must apply for admission to UNE. You should make clear that you are seeking cross-institutional enrolment and NOT admission to a UNE degree. On your admission to UNE, an Enrolment Registration Pack will be sent to you. You must complete the enrolment registration form as a Cross-institutional (XINST) student.

Residential Schools

Where the selected UNE unit/s require attendance at compulsory or mandatory residential school/s, you are responsible for ensuring that commitments at your home university do not prevent your meeting this requirement. Successful completion of a UNE unit with a mandatory residential school requires your attendance as well as other assessment tasls (submission of assignments, etc.).

Examinations

It is your responsibility to ensure that you are able to sit the examination for your UNE unit on the timetabled date. UNE will not change examination times for students who have clashes with examination times at their home institution.

Fees

There are no UNE fees for cross-institutional enrolment except the normal HECS liability at the UNE rate providing that you are a current student at your home university. If you are not enrolled at your home university the same year that you are enrolled at UNE, you may be required to pay the UNE General Service Fee (for details see information under "Non-Award Study").

Non-Award Study

If you wish to enrol for a unit or units offered by UNE but do not want to enrol for a UNE degree you will be enrolling as a Non-Award student.

Application to UNE

Applicants for Non-Award study must apply for admission to UNE. You should make clear that you are seeking Non-Award enrolment and not admission to a UNE degree. An Enrolment Registration Pack will be sent to you and you must complete the enrolment registration form as a Non-Award (NAWARD) student.

NOTE: The Faculty will not check that you have the appropriate background knowledge to complete the unit or units you nominate. This is your responsibility and liability.

Fees

There are no application fees at UNE.

Tuition fees are payable up-front and the charge per six credit point semester unit is $870.

There is also a compulsory fee paid by all students at UNE, which provides membership of the Sports Union, UNE Union and Armidale Students' Association. The fees for 2004 are:
