Sports Studies
|
Please note: the Bachelor of Sports Studies will replace the Bachelor of Sports Science in 2012. Students commencing their studies in 2012 will follow this amended programme structure. [Current students enrolled in Sports Science can continue with their programme of study and graduate with a Bachelor of Sports Science or they may be able to transfer to this amended programme, please contact the course coordinator [details below] if you would like to discuss any of these options.] |
The Bachelor of Sports Studies is a multi-disciplinary course that integrates the theoretical and practical components of the study of sport, health and exercise. The flexible programme includes studies in the social and scientific aspects of sport including human biology, physiology, biomechanics, psychology, nutrition, fitness assessment and performance, health, sports coaching and the sociological, historical and philosophical dimensions of sport.
Building on a foundation of core units in Year 1, the structure of the degree enables students from their second year to either follow the core programme in Sports Studies, or to commence a specialist major in either Sports Management or Physical Education.
The Sports Management major provides the fundamental knowledge required for a career in sports management, with each of the 6 units in the major having a sports specific component.
The Physical Education major includes studies in physical and health education, enabling graduates to enroll in a postgraduate initial teacher education award in Personal Development, Health and Physical Education [PDHPE]. On completion of a postgraduate diploma in PDHPE, graduates would then be able to seek employment as secondary PDHPE teachers.
Graduates from this degree can be employed in a wide range of careers [dependent on major] including sport development and marketing, sport management, health and fitness consultant, sports coaching, sports media and journalism, health promotion, research and policy development and teaching [following a postgraduate initial teacher education course] or pursue postgraduate study in related disciplines.
