School of Science and Technology

Events

The School of Science and Technology is involved in a series of unique events which offer members of the public a chance to have hands on experience using our facilities and the chance to meet our highly accomplished academic staff.

Below is a list of the events that the School of Science and Technology is involved in throughout the year -

Siemen Science days –  15, 16 and 17 January 2013

The Siemens Science Experience is a national program that gives students entering Year 10 an insight into the exciting potential of a career in science and the vital role of scientists in today's society.

The students laboratory work includes investigations in a range of scientific disciplines, including physics, chemistry, biology, robotics, and physiology. They also attend stimulating lectures by some of UNE's most distinguished scientists.

The students also gain valuable experience of life on a university campus. They have the opportunity to stay in a student residence on campus and, in the evenings, to take part in games and sporting activities under the direction of trained instructors.

Science and Engineering Challenge  - 19 and 20 March 2013

The Challenge is a set of fun and competitive activities involving principles of science, engineering and technology. The concept is to immediately engage students, both primary and secondary, in an activity with a minimum of introduction and theory. Students explore scientific principles for themselves rather than being guided to a predetermined answer. Activities include using science and engineering techniques in activites such as a Mission to Mars, Electrocity and Gold Fever to name a few.

Open Day – 3 May 2013

The School of Science and Technology will be offering course advising in Lazenby Hall on the Friday of the open day weekend. This offers members of the public a chance to talk one-on-one with our academic staff and to establish points of contact with both academic and administrative staff. Our aim is to offer potential students and their families the specific information they require about our courses in a one stop shop.

Race Around Campus - 4 May 2012

The School of Science and Technology (S&T) and the School of Environmental and Rural Science (E&RS) have combined forces this year to run a new and exciting event for potential students. The 'Race Around Campus' will take place on the Friday of the 2012 Open Day weekend. Make sure to visit the S&T and E&RS stands in Lazenby Hall to collect your passports and start your journey. We have organised lots of exciting destinations and you could be in the running to win an Apple Ipod Touch.

HSC Booster Days – 3, 4 and 5 June 2013

Students from the New England region visit UNE each year  in school groups for HSC-related activities in Agriculture, Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Mathematics and Physics led by UNE academics and technicians.

After attending the event  one of the teachers who had accompanied students from a rural school advised that her students had learnt a great deal, and commented on the value of the “hands-on” experience they had received in the UNE laboratories.

Deferrals Weekend – 25 and 26 May 2013

The School of Environmental and Rural Science (ERS) and the School of Science and Technology (S&T) run annual  deferrals weekends for students who have deferred their science based studies. These weekends offers an opportunity for these deferred students to talk to lecturers, discuss study options, tour facilities and UNE's residential colleges. Come and see for yourself what sets UNE apart.

Ag Quip – 20, 21 and 22 August 2013

The giant field days are staged over three days in August and are located in Gunnedah, New South Wales. It attracts over 100,000 visitors, the largest visitation of any rural field day in the country.

UNE attends this event annually and provides information to the public on a range of courses on offer through UNE.
