Plant is a general name for all machinery, tools, appliances and equipment. Types of plant include lifts, electrical equipment, power tools, computers, hand held tools, hand trolleys and work shop equipment. UNE has a legislative requirement to:

• identify hazards related to plant and equipment;
• take appropriate action to eliminate or minimise the risks;
• document safe work practices for plant and equipment;
• provide training, information and instruction to staff and students on safe work practices;
• provide supervision.

Best practice for the use of plant at UNE is to:

• ensure that all plant with moving parts is appropriately guarded;
• adopt safe work practices (these should be documented and include emergency procedures where relevant);
• provide information, training and supervised practice as necessary to ensure staff and students follow safe work practices;
• regularly inspect and maintain all equipment to the manufacturers specification.
