First Aid Officers -
Duties & Procedures
1. Provide first aid to any person who requires it primarily
within your building/area but also to be available to render first
aid anywhere in the University.
2. Order and maintain all first aid kits in your building/area:
being an 'B' type kit that should be kept with the first aid officer.
This kit should be accessible in case of emergencies.
Maintenance includes:
- Purchasing of supplies in accordance with the regulations
- Ensuring that old items are disposed of and items
restocked
- Ensuring that kits do not contain any items that are not first
aid items
- Cleaning of kits on a regular basis
3. Ensure that:
- First aid kits are not more that 200m apart in your
building/area and in the case of multi-story buildings kits should
be placed not more than one floor level above or below another
kit
- Kits are constructed of impervious material, and if possible
located near a supply of clean running water
4. Kits should:
- Be clearly labeled on the outside with the words "FIRST
AID"
- Have attached to the inside lid:
- A list of applications and requisitions (supplies)
- A cardio pulmonary resuscitation flow chart
5. Ensure that notices are displayed in a prominent position
near each first aid kit and elsewhere in the building, clearly
showing:
- The name, telephone and room number of the appointed first aid
officer
- The names, telephone and room numbers of any additional
persons located in that building/area currently holding a first
aid certificate
6. Register of injury and treatment forms should be kept in
each first aid kit, completed by the appointed first aid officer
and/or the injured person and sent to the Workplace Risk Management
Unit.
7. Monitor numbers of people in your building/area and
ensure that appropriate first aid kits are made available
8. Inform the Workplace Risk Management Unit on ext
3096:
- When you change location or resign
- When your certificate is close to its expiry date
- When you no longer wish to act as a first aid officer
- Of any newly qualified first aid people in your area and when
any first aid person leaves your area
- If you have any problems such as ordering materials or time
restrictions, etc
- Names of current first aid people in your area and when the
first aid certificates of these people expire
