First Aid Officers - Duties & Procedures

1. Provide first aid to any person who requires it primarily within your building/area but also to be available to render first aid anywhere in the University.

2. Order and maintain all first aid kits in your building/area: being an 'B' type kit that should be kept with the first aid officer. This kit should be accessible in case of emergencies.

Maintenance includes:

  • Purchasing of supplies in accordance with the regulations
  • Ensuring that old items are disposed of and items restocked
  • Ensuring that kits do not contain any items that are not first aid items
  • Cleaning of kits on a regular basis

 3. Ensure that:

  • First aid kits are not more that 200m apart in your building/area and in the case of multi-story buildings kits should be placed not more than one floor level above or below another kit
  • Kits are constructed of impervious material, and if possible located near a supply of clean running water

 4. Kits should:

  • Be clearly labeled on the outside with the words "FIRST AID"
  • Have attached to the inside lid:
  • A list of applications and requisitions (supplies)
  • A cardio pulmonary resuscitation flow chart

 5. Ensure that notices are displayed in a prominent position near each first aid kit and elsewhere in the building, clearly showing:

  • The name, telephone and room number of the appointed first aid officer
  • The names, telephone and room numbers of any additional persons located in that building/area currently holding a first aid certificate

 6. Register of injury and treatment forms should be kept in each first aid kit, completed by the appointed first aid officer and/or the injured person and sent to the Workplace Risk Management Unit.

 7. Monitor numbers of people in your building/area and ensure that appropriate first aid kits are made available

 8. Inform the Workplace Risk Management Unit on ext 3096:

  • When you change location or resign
  • When your certificate is close to its expiry date
  • When you no longer wish to act as a first aid officer
  • Of any newly qualified first aid people in your area and when any first aid person leaves your area
  • If you have any problems such as ordering materials or time restrictions, etc
  • Names of current first aid people in your area and when the first aid certificates of these people expire
