OHS Policy Statement
The University of New England aims to provide an environment
for work and study that is healthy and safe for staff, students and visitors.
The University of New England (UNE) will in accordance with
the Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Act 2000 endeavour to provide
for staff, students, contractors and visitors an environment for work
and study that is physically safe and without risk to health.
This will be facilitated by the ongoing implementation and
continual improvement of UNE OH&S Management Systems developed in
consultation with the UNE community and integrated into all UNE activities.
UNE Senior Management will commit the resources required to enable UNE
Faculties and Directorates to implement the UNE OH&S Management Systems
in order to achieve their OH&S statutory and regulatory obligations.
Deans, Heads of Schools, Heads of Divisions, Directors,
Heads of Colleges and other supervisors in charge of "places of work"
will drive the UNE OH&S Management Systems into the workplaces for
which they are responsible to ensure that the workplace, its plant and
equipment are maintained in a condition that effectively controls health
and safety risks. They will ensure that staff, students and visitors are
provided with the adequate information, instruction, supervision and training
required to enable them to contribute their views and conduct their activities
in a healthy and safe environment. On all matters that have OH&S implications,
they will consult with the relevant staff, and value their opinions, before
decisions are made.
Employees and students will cooperate with their supervisors
in the implementation of UNE OH&S Management Systems and in other
OH&S matters in general. They will perform their activities in a manner
that does not risk harm to themselves or others. They are required to
promptly report workplace accidents and/or hazards to their supervisor.
Employee involvement directed at the improvement of UNE OH&S Management
Systems or other matters relating to health and safety in general is strongly
encouraged.
Contractors while at UNE will comply with the OH&S statutory
and regulatory requirements and with the internal UNE OH&S Management
Systems.
Visitors are required to comply with all UNE policies while
at UNE.
