PhD Scholarship Opportunity - Cotton Soil Systems Research – physical, chemical and biological processes for plant growth and nutrient cycling down the soil profile’.

Although much is known about the surface (0-30 cm) soils in cotton farming systems, processes of organic matter cycling and nutrient release below this depth significantly affect plant growth and productivity. This program aims to investigate whole profile (0-100+ cm) processes and characteristics of C and N storage and turnover and physico-chemical constraints on below-ground processes, plant rooting depth and plant growth under cotton farming and rotational cropping systems. An exciting research opportunity have arisen for an outstanding applicant to join a research program funded by the Cotton Research Development Corporation entitled: Cotton Soil Systems Research – physical, chemical and biological processes for plant growth and nutrient cycling down the soil profile’

Below-ground constraints to rooting depth can affect plant viability and productivity. Potential limitations to subsurface plant activity can be physical (soil structure and compaction, water-availability), chemical (sodicity, salinity, root exudate effects on soil chemistry) and biological (pathogens). This PhD project will explore the below-ground constraints to plant growth, investigating the physical, chemical and biological nature of subsurface soils and its impact on plant growth and production.

We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student with an interest in soil science, soil analysis, and soil management in an agricultural production context.  The project has a significant fieldwork component and the successful candidate is also expected to undertake analytical and statistical work. Strong motivation, willingness to work in remote areas and the capacity to work independently are important qualities.
