Metadata for Research Data
A metadata record is a description of a file or set of files. Where those files are research data, metadata is the information about that collection including its contents, quality, format, collection/creation methodology, storage location, usage requirements, management requirements, and people involved with the collection.
At UNE metadata for research data is created by the Research Data Librarian in consultation with the primary researcher. This will normally happen when there is a completed version of the research data collection which, according to Management and Storage of Research Data and Materials Procedures, is when there is a research output such as a publication, report or thesis completion.
It is important to understand that access to the research metadata record does not mean access to the data collection. Providing open access to the research data collection remains a choice of the UNE researcher.
Once the metadata record has been completed, and all minimum metadata fields filled in, the record will be publicly accessible in RUNE and Research Data Australia, and issued with a Digital Object Identifier (DOI).
