Information for Supervisors of Higher Degree Research Students

The information provided on this page is designed to assist academic staff in their role as Supervisors of Higher Degree Research Students.

The Dean of Graduate Studies exercises responsibility for all UNE Higher Degree Research training activities which includes HDR policy development, recruitment, chairing the HDR and Scholarship committees, enrolments, progression, supervision arrangements and issues, thesis examination and completions, extensions and suspensions of candidature and, importantly, guidance to research students when required. In addition, the Dean of Graduate Studies has the responsibility of representing UNE at the National body of the Council of Deans and Directors of Graduate Studies (DDoGS) meetings.

The Academic Board Higher Degree Research Committee is responsible for all matters relating to postgraduate research candidature and degrees. This Committee meets monthly to consider matters such as admission to degrees, candidature management, appointment of examiners, thesis examination and degree completion and graduation.

Postgraduate Co-ordinators are appointed in most Schools within Faculties. Contact your Faculty Office for details.

Research Services administers all matters related to Higher Degree Research and provides a range of services to assist both supervisors and students. Research Services also provides the administrative support to the Academic Board Higher Degree Research Committee.

Register of Supervisors

In the event that an External Principal Supervisor is to be appointed, the following Principal Supervisor Deed should be completed with reference to the Principal Supervisor Agreement. Schools are referred to the current Honorary, Visiting Scholar and Adjunct Appointments Policy.

Professional Development Workshops

From time to time areas such as Research Services or the Teaching and Learning Centre offer workshops specifically targetted to Academic Supervisors.

Publicity for these workshops is generally provided through the UNE Official email or notices to Heads of Schools.

HDR Progress Report

Higher Degree Research students who are enrolled in the research component of their course, are required to complete an academic progress report each 6 months.

Information and resources available for your HDR students

During the execution of their responsibilities as a supervisor, there will often be the need to complete various forms, or the need to be aware of the various Univesity policies that apply to Higher Degree Research students and supervisors. The relevant policies, guidelines and forms that academic supervisors or Heads of Schools require can be accessed by clicking here.

The University has a number of Postgraduate Scholarships available for Higher Degree Research Students. You may wish to direct your students to these opportunities.

The University of New England has produced a handbook for Postgraduate Research students and supervisors which contains a range of information including student and supervisor responsibilities, general guidelines, a copy of the UNE Code of Conduct for Research and information on the preparation and examination of thesis. Every Higher Degree Research Student and Supervisor should have a copy of this handbook, generally referred to as the "Gold Book". While the handbook is available to download from the web, if you wish to obtain a hardcopy, please contact Research Services.
