NHMRC administers funding for health and medical research on behalf of the
Australian Government.

Research Support
Research Support grants aim to provide funding to support the research undertaken to promote the health of Australians.
The funding schemes available under the Research Support funding group include:
- Project Grants
are the NHMRC's main avenue of support for individuals and small teams of researchers undertaking biomedical, clinical, public health or health services research in Australian universities, medical schools, hospitals or other research institutions. - Program Grants
provide support for teams of researchers, to pursue broadly based collaborative research activity. - Development Grants
provides funding support to individual researchers, research teams, or a HMR company in partnership with a researcher/s to undertake research at the early proof-of-principle or pre-seed stage.
Infrastructure Support
Infrastructure Support grants aim to provide funding to support the infrastructure required to complete health and medical research in Australia.
The funding scheme available under the Infrastructure Support funding group is:
- National Health Research Enabling Capabilities (NHREC) Scheme
aims to ensure a more strategic approach to identifying national health research infrastructure needs, and the provision of funding to support those facilities.
People Support
People Support grants and fellowships aim to provide funding to support the people required to complete health and medical research in Australia.
The funding schemes available under the People Support funding group are:
- NHMRC Research Fellowship
provide support for experienced researchers to undertake research that is of major importance in its field and of significant benefit to Australian health and medical research. - Practitioner Fellowships
provide support for active clinicians and public health or health services professionals to undertake research that is linked to their practice or policy. - Career Development Fellowships
to further develop Australian health and medical early to mid-career researchers.

Research Grant Management System (RGMS)
RGMS is the NHMRC’s new grants administration, reporting and awarded grants system. RGMS replaces all previous systems.
The NHMRC scheduled maintenance window is from 6am to 9am every Tuesday and Thursday morning. Access to RGMS may not be possible during this time.
