ARC Linkage Projects Scheme

ARC

The Linkage Projects scheme supports collaborative research and development projects between higher education organisations and other organisations, including industry, to enable the application of advanced knowledge to problems.

Proposals for funding under Linkage Projects must involve a Partner Organisation from outside the higher education sector.

The Partner Organisation must make a significant contribution in cash and in kind, to the project that is equal to, or greater than, the ARC funding.

The cash contribution must be at least 20% of what is requested from ARC.  I.e., if $100,000 is being requested from ARC, the combined Partner Organisation/s cash contribution must be at least $20,000.  The remaining 80% can be an in-kind contribution (see below for Partner Organisation examples).

R&D Tax Concession

The R&D Tax Concession is the principal Commonwealth Government initiative to increase the amount of research and development (R&D) undertaken in Australia. The aim is to encourage innovative, competitive and export-oriented Australian industries.

Companies incorporated in Australia and undertaking R&D are entitled to the concession - so your Partner Organisation may be eligible to apply.

The concession is available to all Australian companies and offers the following:

  • a tax deduction of up to 125 per cent of expenditure incurred on R&D activities
  • an R&D Incremental (175% Premium) Tax Concession for those companies increasing their R&D expenditure and who have a three-year history of registering and claiming the 125% Tax Concession, or of receiving grants for R&D projects under Innovation Australia’s R&D Start and Commercial Ready programs
  • an R&D Tax Offset for companies with group turnover under $5 million and a grouped expenditure of up to $1 million for the year
  • an R&D Incremental (175% International Premium) Tax Concession for those companies belonging to a multinational enterprise group for additional R&D expenditure on behalf of a grouped foreign company above a rolling three-year average of expenditure.
