Information for Supervisors of
Higher Degree Research Students

This information is designed to assist academic staff in their role as supervisors of Higher Degree Research students.

The Academic Board Higher Degree Research Committee is responsible for all matters relating to postgraduate research candidature and degrees. This Committee meets monthly to consider matters such as admission to degrees, candidature management, appointment of examiners, thesis examination and degree completion and graduation.

Postgraduate Co-ordinators are appointed in most Schools within Faculties. Contact your Faculty Office for details.

Research Services administers all matters related to Higher Degree Research and provides a range of services to assist both supervisors and students. Research Services also provides the administrative support to the Academic Board Higher Degree Research Committee.

Register of Supervisors

All supervisors of higher degree research students must be listed on the Register in order to be appointed as either a Principal or Co-Supervisor.

External Supervisors

In the event that an External Principal Supervisor (who is not an employee of UNE) is to be appointed a Principal Supervisor Deed needs to be completed.

All external supervisors must have a current Adjunct Appointment with the relevant school. Schools are referred to the current Honorary Appointments Policy and the Honorary Appointments Procedures which outlines the process for Adjunct appointments. External supervisors must also apply to be listed on the Register of Supervisors – refer to the Registration of Research Higher Degree Supervisors Policy and the relevant Register of Supervisors Application form.

Professional Development Workshops

From time to time areas such as Research Services or the Teaching and Learning Centre offer workshops specifically targetted to Academic Supervisors.

Publicity for these workshops is generally provided through the UNE Official email or notices to Heads of Schools.

HDR Progress Report

Higher Degree Research students who are enrolled in the research component of their course, are required to complete an academic progress report each 6 months.
