Australian Postgraduate Awards
Australian Postgraduate Awards provide a living allowance for high-quality research higher degree students. They are awarded on academic merit and research experience and/or potential.
To be eligible, you must:
- be a domestic applicant or an international student who holds an IPRS
- enroll in a postgraduate research degree as a full-time internal candidate of the University of New England
- not previously have held a Commonwealth-funded postgraduate research scholarship unless it was terminated within six months of the scholarship payments commencing.
- not be receiving an equivalent award, scholarship or salary providing a benefit greater than 75% of the APA stipend rate to undertake the HDR
- not have completed a research degree at the same level as the proposed candidature, or at a higher level
It is normal for recipients to undertake study on a full-time basis, although, subject to strict criteria laid down by the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (DIISR), the award may be offered for part-time study.
Applications can be submitted at anytime throughout the year and will be considered in the next available round.
Stipend:
AU$24,653.00 (2013 rate) per annum tax free for full-time students, paid in fortnightly installments.
AU$12,326.00 (2013 rate) per annum, taxable, for part-time students, paid in fortnightly installments.
Maximum Duration:
Three years full-time for a doctoral degree, two years for a research Master's degree.
How to apply:
Complete the Domestic Students Candidature/Scholarship Application Form. This is the same form you will use to apply for candidature, and you will need to indicate on the form that you are applying for an APA scholarship in addition to candidature.
Detailed instructions are included on the form. Please make sure all required documentation is attached, or your application may not be considered.
Referee Reports
- All applicants must provide two referee reports. The University will not request reports on your behalf.
- Referees must be qualified to speak with knowledge about your work during the qualification most relevant to this application and on your capacity for research. If you are also basing this application on relevant work experience/training, at least one of your referees must be able to comment on your relevant experience.
You must also provide contact details of your referees on the application form and ask them to submit their written reports directly to the University on the Referee’s Report Form.
