Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research)

With the recent appointment of Professor Jim Barber as the new Vice-Chancellor, the University of New England is entering the next phase of its development, consolidating and enhancing its important role in the economic and cultural life of Armidale and the New England region. As Australia's first university outside a capital city, the University occupies a unique place in the higher education landscape and enjoys an enviable reputation as one of Australia's pre-eminent centres of teaching and research. Its graduates consistently rate the University highly in terms of the education experience. With more than 500 PhD candidates, the University has a strong presence in postgraduate education and, consequently, in research.

The University's ten schools are organised into two faculties: the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and the Faculty of The Professions.

This key senior position, along with the new Vice-Chancellor and the rest of the senior executive, will play important and pivotal roles in the development and execution of the University's strategy and goals in the coming years.

Reporting to the Vice-Chancellor, and managing the Research Services Directorate, you will:

  • Drive strategic leadership for the development and delivery of research outcomes
  • Implement strategies to elevate the level of research activity and output
  • Manage and enhance governance and management arrangements that support, promote and regulate research
  • Source and manage research funding and monitor expenditure
  • Oversee reporting of research activity
  • Represent the University to external funding bodies and government agencies

To be successful in this role you will:

  • Be highly effective in initiating and managing relationships, and in building effective, highly successful teams
  • Provide motivational leadership in setting strategic directions in research
  • Engage and collaborate successfully with diverse and competing stakeholders
  • Be a respected researcher with an international reputation
  • Have experience in managing diverse research activities and IP
  • Have demonstrated the ability to manage budgets, staff and resources at a senior level
