The School of Environmental and Rural Science is one of the largest and most respected agricultural and environmental science Schools in Australia, with over 85 academics, 100 postgraduate students and approaching 1000 undergraduates with excellent links to Industry. The School's activities are research-led, covering a wide range of disciplines. Our scientists are internationally recognised as experts on Australia's unique flora and fauna, geological processes and landscapes, environmental management and engineering, animal science, agronomy and soil science. The School philosophy focuses on undertaking research, and training undergraduate and postgraduate students as scientists and managers with a holistic view of environmental, rural and agricultural systems.
We are seeking a lecturer with a comprehensive knowledge of the biology of parasites (protozoans and animals that are parasitic upon other animals). We are especially interested in someone with expertise in the co-evolutionary relationship between parasites and their hosts: for instance, on how parasites affect the survival, health and behaviour of their hosts, and how hosts avoid or reduce the negative impact of parasites on them.
The appointee will contribute to teaching relevant units in general Zoology as well as in units in Animal Science that relate to animal production, health and welfare. They will maintain a substantial research program, in collaboration with scientists at UNE and in other organisations, attract competitive research grants and sustain an active group of postgraduate students. They will also assist in building strong links between the disciplines of Zoology and Animal Science.
This is a five-year fixed-term position with the possibility of further appointment, and/or conversion to a continuing appointment, subject to satisfactory performance and the availability of funding. Consideration may be given to filling the position on a less than full-time basis. The successful applicant will be supported to undertake research and seek further funding opportunities to maintain a position within the School beyond the initial five-year appointment.
