The University of New England is a leader in teaching and research in many areas of the Arts and Humanities. Staff in the School of Arts teach and research in English, Communication Studies and Writing, Asian and European Languages and their cultures, Music and Theatre Studies. The School has developed a range of Music Studies programs at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. These programs cover Performance, Musicology (Ethnomusicology and Western Musicology), Composition, Analysis, Theory, Aural Training, and Music Technology. Music students at UNE come from a variety of backgrounds including Western Classical, Jazz and Contemporary. A majority of students study externally through online and other distance modes. The University also maintains a vibrant music program for students studying on-campus in Armidale.
The School is seeking to appoint a Lecturer (Academic Level B) in Music to commence duties in semester 1, 2010.
The appointee must possess a PhD or other doctoral qualification in Music and the necessary expertise to develop and teach coursework at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The appointee will be responsible for the co-ordination of the performance studies program. He or she must also have demonstrable expertise and capacity to teach aspects of at least two of the following: musicology, composition, aural training, theory, and music technologies. The appointee must have knowledge of a wide range of musical styles within the Western art music tradition and either Jazz or Contemporary music traditions. The appointee must be able to supervise Honours and higher degree research candidates, and contribute actively to the School's creative practice and research profile.
The School is renowned for its distance education expertise and the appointee must have the ability to contribute to the online delivery of units. A commitment to work productively as a team member will be an essential quality of the successful applicant. The ability to undertake unit coordination and other standard academic administrative duties is expected.
