The University of New England is a leader in teaching and research in many areas of the Arts and Humanities. Staff in the School of Arts teach and research in English, Communication Studies and Writing, Asian and European Languages, Music and Theatre Studies. Associated with an active research culture, the School has developed a range of Media Studies programs at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. These programs cover film, television, media and culture, and new media. The School plans to extend student internship opportunities relevant to these programs. This position is available to commence in Semester 2, 2009. The appointee will play a central role in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate coursework units in Media Studies, supervise Honours and research higher degree candidates, and contribute actively to the School's research profile. She or he will be involved in teaching on-campus and off-campus students and in the online development and delivery of units. The appointee may be required to help develop components of international programs and teach them outside Australia in short intensive blocks. The appointee must possess a PhD or other doctoral qualification in Media Studies or a closely related field and the necessary expertise and capacity to develop and teach coursework at undergraduate and postgraduate levels that includes the study of new media technologies. He or she must also have demonstrable expertise and capacity to teach in at least one, and preferably more than one, of the following: film studies; television studies; critical and practical study of the news media; advertising and public relations; writing for screen or radio; children's media. This position would ideally suit someone wishing to further their career, while benefiting from the relaxed environment of the university town of Armidale, New England. Only two hours from the mid-north coast, Armidale is surrounded by world heritage national parks and is a unique regional centre that offers all the facilities of a much larger city. Recognised as an important cultural centre, Armidale is well served in art, music, theatre and education. The latter includes public and private schools.
