Senior Lecturer in Writing

The University of New England is a leader in teaching and research in many areas of the Arts and Humanities. Staff in the School of Arts teach and research in English, Communication Studies and Writing, Asian and European Languages, Music and Theatre Studies. Distinctive programs of study in Writing have been developed in the School and further research initiatives in this area are being undertaken. These programs are interdisciplinary combinations of academic, professional, organisational and creative writing and editing; writing and publishing in traditional and new media; and the rhetoric of print and audiovisual forms. The School has been developing, and plans to extend, student internship opportunities relevant to its Writing programs. The position is available to commence early in Semester 2, 2009. The appointee will play a central role in teaching the School's undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Writing and contribute actively to the School's Research Profile. She or he will be involved in teaching on-campus and off-campus students and in the online development of units. The successful applicant may be required to help develop components of international programs and teach them outside Australia in short intensive blocks. He or she will be expected to take on a leadership role in teaching and work collegially and productively as a team member. The appointee must possess a PhD or other doctoral qualification in Writing or a closely related discipline area. Relevant scholarly and professional/industry experience in Writing as well as demonstrable scholarly and professional achievement, including research publications are required. Also essential to the position are demonstrable expertise in the pedagogy of Writing in higher education, the ability to teach multiple writing genres and practices at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and capacity to undertake unit/course coordination. This position would ideally suit someone wishing to further their career, while benefiting from the relaxed environment of the university town of Armidale, New England. Only two hours from the mid-north coast, Armidale is surrounded by world heritage national parks and is a unique regional centre that offers all the facilities of a much larger city. Recognised as an important cultural centre, Armidale is well served in art, music, theatre and education. The latter includes public and private schools.
