Lecturer in French

School of Arts

The University of New England has a long history of teaching languages and their associated literatures and cultures. Language teaching is all disciplines is from ab initio level. The School of Arts wishes to fill a continuing position of Lecturer in French from 1 July 2008. The successful applicant will teach undergraduate units in the contemporary language and in relevant literary/cultural areas, supervise honours and higher degree research students, and contribute actively to the discipline’s research profile.

The successful applicant will have native or near-native competency in French and the ability to work in an English-speaking university. They will have a PhD in a recognised area of French Studies and have a strong record in research and in post-graduate supervision, particularly in nineteenth-century French literature. The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate experience in teaching French language in a tertiary institution and the ability to communicate effectively and work productively as a team member, and will be expected to contribute actively to curriculum development, to undertake standard administrative duties, and to participate in cross-disciplinary programmes.

Experience in distance education and online teaching and the readiness to seek outside research funding are desirable.

This position would ideally suit someone wishing to further their career, while benefiting from the relaxed environment of the university town of Armidale, New England. Only two hours from the mid-north coast, Armidale is surrounded by world heritage national parks; it is a unique country town that offers all the facilities of a city. Recognised as an important cultural centre, Armidale is well served in art, music, theatre and education. The latter includes public and private schools. KPMG demographer Bernard Salt has rated Armidale in the top ten boom towns in Australia because of its on-going construction and its educational facilities.

Salary: $65,963 to $78,178 per annum (Lecturer)
plus 17% employer superannuation and optional salary packaging
