The University of New England is a world-leading provider of research and education in the sciences including rural science. The Precision Agriculture Research Group (PARG) is a multi-disciplinary team working in the development and application of precision agriculture technologies in Australia and overseas. We seek a highly motivated Junior Research Fellow to work on the CRC for Spatial Information Project titled “Clever Cattle and Cropping Systems” and to investigate methods of measuring, modelling and mapping carbon storage in agricultural landscapes. The successful applicant will conduct a scoping study (based on reviewing literature and surveying current Australian and overseas research programs) and prepare a report on the current status of carbon assessment in agricultural landscapes. They will then design and implement a demonstration, baseline carbon inventorying programme at one of the University’s rural properties. Applicants must possess a sound understanding of natural and rural ecosystems and should have several years experience in environmental assessment, preferably with a focus on vegetation, soil and geological evaluation. As this position is a combination of office and field work, applicants are expected to demonstrate a sound understanding of occupational health and safety issues relating to field work in remote environments as well as demonstrate experience in working in the field under varying environmental conditions. This is a fixed-term, part time (0.6) position available for one year with the possibility of further appointment subject to satisfactory performance and funding.
