Teaching and Learning News

New staff member for TLC

The Teaching and Learning Centre welcomes Sarah Stein who joins the staff as Senior Lecturer in Higher Education. Sarah will teach the Graduate Certificate in Higher Education and coordinate academic development programs.

Sarah comes to UNE after holding the position of Lecturer in Higher Education within the Educational Consultancy and Evaluation (ECE) section of the Teaching and Educational Development Institute (TEDI) at the University of Queensland. Her job there was to provide academic leadership to Schools and Faculties in the areas of university teaching and learning, curriculum renewal, design, development, implementation and evaluation, including innovation and research in these areas.

Prior to starting at the University of Queensland, Sarah had been a school teacher for 11 years and then an education officer for seven years, providing curriculum support for teachers and schools at primary and secondary levels. As an education officer, Sarah worked with school principals and teachers in the area of curriculum design, development, implementation and evaluation. She provided and assisted with the planning of in-service training and teacher professional development in all areas of school curriculum implementation across subject areas.

During this time, Sarah also gained a number of qualifications including her Master of Education (Research), which was in science education.

In mid 1996, Sarah undertook full time study towards her PhD at the Queensland University of Technology, and at the same time tutored and lectured in science education and technology education within undergraduate and postgraduate teacher education courses. She was involved also in a number of research projects on science education and technology education. Her doctoral study was in the area of design and technology education and this area continues to form one focus of her research program. Sarah’s second research focus is teaching, learning and curriculum in higher education settings.

Sarah has presented papers at conferences both local and international, and has published in Australian and international research journals on teaching, learning and teacher professional development issues. She is the current chair of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) design and technology special interest group.
