Success with funding for teaching and staff development

20/9/99 (092/99)

The University of New England recorded successes in the recent allocation of highly-competitive national funding from the Committee for University Teaching and Staff Development (CUTSD).

Professor Sue Johnston, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) pro tem was awarded one of sic Staff Development Projects awarded nationally, $98,829 for a project to enhance project management skills of academic, technical and other support staff involved in teaching projects.

"Project management has been identified as a significant factor in the success of teaching development projects funded by CUTSD as well as those funded through internal university funding mechanisms," Professor Johnston commented.

"Project management is becoming increasingly important as many innovative approaches to teaching and learning, particularly those involving information technology, require the co-ordination and management of a range of staff who bring different experience and skills to the process," she said.

Outcomes for the project will be used as a model of staff development, involving a set of materials and a series of case studies using an action research approach. UNE is also a partner in three other projects funded through the scheme.

Robyn Muldoon from the Teaching and Learning Centre will contribute to another Staff Development project funded through the University of Wollongong to develop communication skills in professional courses. This will build on her own project funded by CUTSD in 1998. Dr Catherine McLoughlin from the Teaching and Learning Centre will participate in a project funded through Murdoch University on the evaluation of technology-based teaching development projects. Dr Trevor Brown from the School of Physical Sciences and Engineering will participate in a project funded as an Organisational Grant through the University of Sydney to enhance student learning in first year laboratory classes in chemistry.
