Global, National and Regional Perspectives

Political and International Studies (PAIS) is a relatively new and vibrant area of teaching and research at UNE. Our aim is to ensure that students are introduced to knowledge at the cutting edge of a rapidly changing world. As international trends and developments are impacting on Australia it is becoming more important to develop a sound understanding of how political, economic, and social processes interconnect at local, regional and global levels. Through an interesting and topical spread of subjects, PAIS will assist students to develop a broad range of skills and knowledge that will enable them to critically analyse and make sense of Australia’s changing place within a turbulent international environment.

PAIS students are taught by staff who possess strong and diverse teaching and research backgrounds in the areas of, International Relations, Global Political Economy, Political Theory, the Comparative Politics and Societies of East and Southeast Asia, Pacific Politics, Australian Politics, Applied Public Policy and Globalisation.

In an increasingly competitive global employment market PAIS equips students with the skills to locate and use information, to critically analyse data, to develop cogent arguments and to express their ideas and opinions in a logical and persuasive manner. Acquiring these skills provides PAIS students with an enhanced capacity to successfully launch or further their chosen career paths. Recent PAIS graduates are currently employed in a diverse range of occupations across private, public and government sectors.

PAIS units may be easily combined with degrees in Law, Commerce, Economics, Education, Teaching, History, Urban and Regional Planning, Modern Languages and so on. From 2007 all our units will have a PAIS code which will make the process of enrolling much easier.
