Bach Festival director Caroline Downer has expressed her delight,
and her appreciation of regional audiences, after record attendances
at the second New England Bach Festival.
“The New England Bach Festival Committee would like to particularly
thank its local sponsors and friends, without whom this festival
would be unable to take place,” Ms Downer said today.
“Black Dot Music, Cameron Kirk Rose, Moin and Associates,
Roberts & Morrow, the Armidale Music Foundation, the New England
Conservatorium of Music, the University of New England, Watson,
McNamara & Watt, and Armidale Dumaresq Council have all been
great with their support,” she said.
Large, appreciative audiences had enjoyed some superb performances
from leading early-music musicians at this year’s New England
Bach Festival, she continued. “Audience members came from
as far away as Canberra, Sydney and Brisbane, as well as from around
the region. Responses have been more than positive; the Bach Festival
has certainly put Armidale on the map as an important centre for
historically-informed performances of Baroque music.”

An audience of more than 380 enjoyed the major event, by the Brandenburg
Ensemble and the Song Company, who performed a number of J.S. Bach’s
cantatas.
“A highlight of the Festival for me was Bach’s solo
violin partitas played by Anna McDonald in the Ursuline Chapel at
lunchtime on Monday," Ms Downer said. “Anna’s playing
was particularly expressive, and the acoustics of the Chapel allowed
for a wonderful harmonic resonance.
“We would also like to thank the Armidale community, who
have supported this year’s Festival by their enthusiastic
attendance at performances. We hope to see you at the next Festival.”
