The University of New England (UNE) and the National Institute
of Accountants (NIA) have signed an agreement that will see the
start of an enhanced Postgraduate Accounting Program, including
a Master of Commerce degree at UNE.
The relationship was launched today at a meeting between UNE Vice-Chancellor,
Ingrid Moses, and the president of the NIA, Klaus Zimmermann.
The Postgraduate Accounting Program offers members of the National
Institute of Accountants a Graduate Certificate in Professional
Accounting, leading to a Master of Commerce. The program is available
through distance education and can be undertaken either full or
part-time.
The program will be run through UNE's New England Business School.
Completion of the GCPA and MCom will qualify NIA members for the
highest level of membership in the association, Professional National
Accountant.
Program coordinator John Whitman said the program would provide
students with the tools to meet the demands of future employment
in a rapidly evolving profession.
"This is an excellent initiative for NEBS and an opportunity
to work closely with a professional association," he said.
"The partnership between UNE and the NIA is recognition of
their shared commitment to provide contemporary and relevant education."

The first student intake commence their studies through UNE this
semester, with more than 100 students enrolled in the GCPA and 30
students enrolled in the MCom (Professional Accounting).
"This is an excellent result for our first intake," Mr
Whitman said. "We are expecting enrolments to grow in the future
and hope to be able to provide the course to international students
who are members of the NIA."
The full Postgraduate Accounting Program can be completed in one
year, on a full-time basis. Many members choose to study part-time
and have up to five years to complete the full-program.
