The modest man who pulls out all stops behind the scenes to ensure
the University of New England’s staff get paid on time each
fortnight has been recognised with a Vice-Chancellor’s Award
for Excellence in Service.
For Michael Pollard, who received the award at a recent Vice-Chancellor’s
Forum at UNE, it means extra work every second weekend to check
that the complex payroll process operates as it should.
He was nominated for the award by the Director of Human Resource
Services at UNE, Kristin Adair, who noted that Mr Pollard’s
dedication would be unknown to most people around the University.
In presenting the award the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ingrid Moses,
referred to Mr Pollard's "extreme dedication, above and beyond
the call of duty".

"While there are others who contribute to the payroll process,
the responsibility at the end of the day rests with Michael, and
he takes this responsibility very seriously," Professor Moses
said. "Michael has adapted to various major changes over the
years and has seen the implementation of two new payroll systems
since he started."
Mr Pollard, the Systems/Payroll Officer in Personnel Services,
joined the University in May 1987 in the Salaries and Wages Office
and he has been involved in the pay area ever since.
"Michael is a quiet and unassuming worker who does not seek
recognition for his work," Professor Moses said. "Where
staff require help or assistance, Michael provides it in a patient
and helpful manner. It is because of the 'unsung hero' nature of
both the man and the role, that Michael was deemed worthy of the
Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Service."
