News Release:

Head of Poultry CRC to outline program

Date 28/11/03 No 215/03

Everyone with a stake in Australia's poultry industries, consumers as well as producers, will have a chance to hear about research and education initiatives at a public lecture in Tamworth next week.

The Chief Executive Officer of Australia's newly-established Poultry Cooperative Research Centre (Poultry CRC), Dr Mingan Choct, will outline current and future research projects that will have a positive impact on producers and consumers alike.

Dr Choct, an Associate Professor at the University of New England, will present his lecture at the UNE Tamworth Centre (24 Fitzroy Street) at 7.30 pm on Thursday 4 December.

The Australian Government's Science Minister, Peter McGauran, visited UNE in October this year to launch the Poultry CRC. The CRC is already working to reduce the industry's reliance on antibiotics, enhance welfare standards and the health of birds, develop and commercialise new health products, improve the education and skills of industry staff at all levels, and reduce the industries' impact on the environment.

"We want everyone involved in the poultry industries to feel part of our endeavour," Dr Choct said. "Thursday's event will help them to find out what the Poultry CRC can do for their own business and for the industries as a whole."

The Poultry CRC is based at UNE. Dr Choct said that, during UNE's 40-year history of poultry research, the University had developed a close working relationship with the industries. The four other core partners in the CRC are the University of Melbourne, Bioproperties (Australia) Pty Ltd, the Rural Industry Research and Development Corporation, and the Australian Egg Corporation Ltd. There are also 15 supporting participants throughout Australia. The Executive Chairman of the Australian Chicken Meat Federation, Dr Jeff Fairbrother, is Chairman of the Poultry CRC's Governing Board.

Light refreshments will be available on the evening. For more information, or to register attendance, please contact Associate Professor Julie Roberts at UNE on (02) 6773 2506.
