The University of New England’s Indigenous Employment Coordinator,
Mr Steve Widders, has been recognised in a State-wide award for
his “encouragement and inspiration”.
Mr Widders, who is blind, was a finalist in the NSW Aboriginal
Employment and Business Awards held in Sydney.
The Deputy Premier of NSW, Dr Andrew Refshauge, presented the awards,
organised by the NSW Department of Education and Training, Department
of State and Regional Development, and Department of Aboriginal
Affairs.
The NSW Aboriginal Employment and Business Awards were first presented
in 1999. The awards provide formal public recognition of outcomes
achieved for Aboriginal people through Aboriginal employment and
small business. They honour four areas of employment: "private
employer", "State Government agency", "local
council", and "Aboriginal employment coordinator"
(in which Mr Widders was a finalist).

is a “source of encouragement and inspiration for his clients,
his fellow staff and the general community through his commitment
to employment and training opportunities for Aboriginal people,"
the award organisers said.
Mr Loftus Harris, Director-General, Department of State and Regional
Development, representing Mr David Campbell, the Minister for Small
Business, Minister for Regional Development, and Minister for the
Illawarra, attended the function and presented the Business Awards.
