More than 2,000 visitors are expected in Armidale over Friday and
Saturday [April 4 and 5] for the first of this year's Autumn Graduation
ceremonies at the University of New England.
During the initial ceremony, on Friday, the Chancellor of the University,
Dr Pat O'Shane, will present testamurs to more than 300 graduands
from the Faculty of The Sciences and the School of Health.
Dr Bernie Bindon, Chief Executive Officer of the Cooperative Research
Centre for Cattle and Beef Quality, will give the Occasional Address
at this ceremony. Dr Bindon, who holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees
in Rural Science from UNE and a PhD from the University of Sydney,
has an international reputation for his research on the reproductive
biology and genetic improvement of cattle and sheep.
Four Science graduands will receive University Medals. One of these,
David John Fisher, graduating with a Bachelor of Rural Science (Honours)
degree, will also be presented with the Edgar H. Booth Medal.

Roderick West, the Occasional Address speaker at Saturday's ceremony
for the Faculty of Arts, holds a Master of Arts degree from the
University of Sydney and a Bachelor of Divinity degree from the
University of London. He has had a distinguished career as a teacher
and administrator at several of the most renowned schools in Australia,
and in England. In 2002 he was Interim Principal of PLC Armidale.
During Saturday's ceremony around 230 graduands will receive their
testamurs from the Chancellor, and two Bachelor of Arts (Honours)
graduands will be presented with University Medals.
The following week, the ceremonies for Economics, Business and
Law and Combined Law (Friday 11 April) and Education and Professional
Studies (Saturday 12 April) will also bring about 2,000 visitors
to Armidale.
Altogether, just over 2,000 students are graduating from UNE this
Autumn, with about 1,000 of those actually attending the ceremonies.
Those unable to attend are sent their testamurs in the mail.
