The man who began the University of New England's formal association
with Tamworth has been honoured in a ceremony at UNE's Tamworth
Centre.
The Vice-Chancellor of UNE, Professor Ingrid Moses, officially opened
the centre's lecture theatre on November 8, naming it the Campbell
Howard Lecture Theatre.
Mr Albert Campbell Morgan Howard (known as "Cam") opened
the UNE Adult Education Centre in Tamworth in 1955 and remained
its Director till 1972.
Mr Howard joined UNE's Department of Adult Education after a career
as a teacher, supervisor of music, Teacher's College lecturer and
District Inspector of Schools. For many years he was the conductor
of the UNE Choral Society, and he began the University's Annual
Residential Music School which attained a world-wide reputation.
Graham Maddox, Professor of Politics at UNE, who worked with Mr
Howard in Adult Education and took over the organisation of the
Residential Music School from him, spoke during the ceremony about
their association.
The Campbell Howard Lecture Theatre can accommodate an audience
of about 70, and has an audio-visual system that can be used for
any kind of presentation. The Manager of the Tamworth Centre, Frances
Kelly, said: "The naming of our lecture theatre after Cam Howard
is most appropriate. Mr Howard worked enthusiastically in extending
university education into the community, and the Campbell Howard
Lecture Theatre will be used for public lectures as well as for
lectures related to UNE courses."
Representatives of Tamworth City Council and the Tamworth community
attended the ceremony, and about 60 UNE staff members who were also
in Tamworth for UNE's Strategic Forum on November 8 and 9.

Mr Howard's son, Mr Graham Howard, travelled from Sydney to the
ceremony. Graham and his brother David (who was unable to travel
from his home in Cairns) both said how proud and happy they were
about the honour to their father.
