Tamworth people will have a chance to inspect their city's new
centre for university education next week.
The University of New England Tamworth Centre will be officially
opened by Member for New England, Mr Stuart St Clair, on behalf
of Dr David Kemp, the Federal Minister for Education, Training and
Youth Affairs, on Wednesday 13 June. The opening ceremony, before
an audience of about 80 invited representatives of the Tamworth
and UNE communities, is scheduled for 11.30 am to 1.30 pm. After
the ceremony, the Centre will be open to the public for a "Discovery
Afternoon" beginning at 1.30 pm and continuing till 4 pm.
There will be special displays, demonstrations of UNE support programs,
and opportunities to talk to UNE staff members. Visitors will be
able to see for themselves how UNE has refurbished the ground floor
of Peel House to accommodate bright, fully-equipped lecture and
seminar rooms and computer laboratories. Prize-winning banners designed
by Tamworth artist Emma-Lee Weis will be flying at the front of
the building throughout the day.

UNE's Tamworth Centre links Tamworth with the University's Armidale
campus by providing UNE students in Tamworth with lectures, seminars
and workshops conducted by UNE lecturers and support staff. It also
provides students with access to the Internet, and to course material
delivered online. It has a lift which meets all equity and access
requirements, and wheelchair access through the landscaped forecourt
on Fitzroy Street.
The University achieved all this with the help of the Commonwealth
Government, which provided $1 million for establishment costs, and
Tamworth City Council, which provided the building. Tamworth architect
John Carr drew up the plans for the renovation.
