A Professor of Economics at The University of New England has been ranked 11th among university economics lecturers throughout Australia and New Zealand for the number of articles published in peer-reviewed economics journals between 1988 and 2002.

Professor Brian Dollery’s achievement will be documented in a forthcoming article in the Journal of Economic Surveys.

The authors of the article, Joseph Macri and Dipendra Sinha, compared the publication records of 664 economics lecturers at the 25 Australian and seven New Zealand universities that teach economics. “The rankings are restricted to full-time teaching economists of the rank of Lecturer and above,” their article explains.

Their survey covers about 500 refereed economics journals, in which 479 of the lecturers published papers during the 1988-2002 period. It reveals that lecturers from only seven other universities (all in Australian capital cities) published more articles than UNE’s Professor Dollery.

Professor Dollery came to UNE from South Africa in 1988, the first year covered by the survey. A prolific author, he has published more than 200 papers in refereed journals throughout his academic career (many of them in politics and public administration journals not included in the survey). His other professional publications include the co-authorship of seven books, seven monographs, and 12 book chapters.

Throughout his UNE career (as Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor and Professor) he has taught courses in public finance, and he is perhaps best known as a cogent voice in the financial argument against the amalgamation of local government councils. He says he hopes his legacy will be “to have made a bit of a difference” in Australian local government.

Professor Roley Piggott, Executive Dean of UNE’s Faculty of Economics, Business and Law, said the Faculty was proud to have Professor Dollery among its staff. “He does a tremendous job maintaining the Faculty’s research profile,” Professor Piggott said. “He’s also a very good teacher, and is a prime example of good research and good teaching going hand in hand. As part of his teaching, he encourages his students to publish their research results, and that gets them off to a very good start.”

Professor Dollery said Professor Piggott had contributed to his publication success “by making the Faculty a very pleasant place to work, and by fostering research”. He also acknowledged the role of UNE’s Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research and Development), Professor Peter Flood, who had developed “a most effective strategic plan for research at the University”.
