Music in Armidale

Armidale has an extremely vibrant cultural life that provides students and residents with numerous opportunities to perform and listen to music. There are a number of community instrumental ensembles  in which students can participate. These include:

A variety of Choral Ensembles also meet regularly including:

  • Armidale Choral Society

The Armidale Musical Society regularly puts on musical theatre productions. The University Colleges also organise a variety of musical events throughout the year.

The New England Conservatorium of Music  was established in 2005 and is located in the CB Newling Building with the Discipline of Music. Many students seek instrumental tuition from teachers associated with the conservatorium. While, NECOM is not a part of the University of New England, the close proximity NECOM and the University enhances opportunities for students to share in ensemble performance and in other musical events.

The New England region is also home to a number of outstanding instrument makers. Peter Biffin and Jeff Kemp are two of Australia’s leading luthiers who reside close by. In addition, a number of other music organizations in Armidale make significant contributions to the musical life of the town:
