Auditions
APPLICATIONS TO AUDITION
FOR ADMISSION IN TRIMESTER 1 2013
WILL CLOSE ON 3 FEBRUARY 2013.
The Audition
There are three components to the audition – a practical performance, a theory examination and a statement on your musical background and goals. Students wanting to be accepted into the Bachelor of Music course or the Bachelor of Music/Bachelor of Teaching course must pass all three components. To register for an audition, applicants should complete the "Application to Audition Form" (please scroll to bottom of page and submit it to the University).
PLEASE NOTE: Remember that you need to make a formal application for admission before you can apply for the audition. Please refer to the Bachelor of Music information in the Course and Unit Catalogue or Bachelor of Music/Bachelor of Teaching information in the Course and Unit Catalogue for details on the Music-based courses.
Note that the way you apply for admission varies according to whether you will be studying on or off campus, and whether you have previously studied at UNE. You will either apply through UAC or QTAC, or directly to UNE. Applicants for distance education, and former/current UNE students, apply directly to UNE; new applicants for on-campus study apply through UAC or QTAC.
Practical Performance
Students are required to perform two contrasting pieces totalling up to 10-15mins. (i.e. different genres, or styles or tempo or articulation. This could also consist of two distinctly contrasting pieces within the same genre). One of the aims of undertaking the performance audition is to demonstrate the varied aspects of your musical abilities. Pieces chosen should be at least Grade 6 AMEB (or equivalent) level or higher.

Theory Examination
The theory examination tests general knowledge and analytical ability. The first part of the exam tests rudimentary knowledge such as notation skills, key signatures, harmonic analysis and rudimentary general knowledge (worth 60%). The second part of the paper tests broader analytical skills in relation to a musical score (worth 40%).
Personal Statement
This consists of a 2-page statement summarizing your prior musical study and experience (including knowledge and interest in specific musical repertoires), reasons for wanting to undertake tertiary study in music, and outlining your musical, professional or scholarly goals for the future. In this statement, you should show clarity and coherence in your writing.
All three components must be to the satisfaction of the Convenor of Music in order to pass the audition.
Practical Performance
Students who choose to complete a live audition in Armidale at UNE Music, CB Newling Building, will be required to register via the Online Application to Audition form (see below). This application will be acknowledged and students will be informed about the date and time for their practical performance audition.
Auditioning via Distance
Students who wish to audition via distance are encouraged to upload their audition recordings via YouTube and send the link of the recording to music@une.edu.au. Alternatively, students may choose to submit a recorded audition and must do so on DVD or CD. Audio recordings may be either in AIFF (standard CD) or MP3/4 format. Recordings should be clearly labelled with the name and address of the student, as well as the details of the performance. Please post your recordings to:
