AUDITIONS FOR 2009 ENTRY – MUSIC STUDY AT UNE
First round: September 29 and October 2
Second round: November 17 to 21
Please read the following information, then proceed to the Application to Audition form links at the foot of this page.
THE AUDITION:
There are two components to the audition – a practical performance and a one hour written paper. All students should complete an ‘Application to Audition Form’ and submit it to the University by the date required in order to secure an audition time.
Practical Performance
Students are required to perform two contrasting pieces from two periods or styles. Pieces chosen should be roughly Grade 6 – 8 AMEB level or higher. Students may choose works from outside the classical repertoire if they wish.
Written Paper
The written paper tests general knowledge, analytical ability and aural skills. The first segment of the paper tests rudimentary knowledge such as notation skills, simple rhythmic and melodic transcription, key signatures, pitch recognition and rudimentary general knowledge. The second segment of the paper tests broader aural and analytical skills in relation to more lengthy listening and notated examples. Candidates must demonstrate a comprehensive grasp of the rudimentary knowledge/skills as tested in the first part of the paper. The second part of the paper allows students to be ranked for the purposes of admission.
Auditions in Armidale
Students who choose to complete a live audition in Armidale will be informed about the date and time for their audition either by post or by email. Students will complete the written paper at 11:00 am on the day of their audition and will be scheduled to perform their practical component at some other time on that day.
Auditions by Distance
Students may choose to submit a recorded audition and must do so on CD, DVD, Mini-Dig., VHS or Cassette format. Audio recordings may be either in AIFF (standard CD) or MP3/4 format. Recordings should be clearly labelled with the name and address of the student, as well as the details of the performance. Students who choose to complete a recorded audition must also nominate a local school music teacher who can invigilate the written paper at their school. Once the audition application form has been completed, the University will contact this person independently. The written paper will be posted to the nominated teacher who will co-ordinate the place of the examination. All written papers will be set at a time to be determined during the audition period.
