What is UMMA?

UMMA is an independent organization and is based at The University of New England (UNE) Mosque. UMMA comprises UNE Muslim staff, students and the general community, and is responsible to the Muslim Community in Armidale and the surrounding areas.

       Objectives of UMMA

  • Organize activities related to the UNE Mosque including the maintenance and development of the mosque building, its cleaning and decorating;
  • Organize regular activities in the Mosque such as Jumah prayer, Idul Fitr, IdulAdha, and other Islamic celebrations;
  • Teaching of the Alquran and Alhadiths;
  • Provide halal food for the Muslim Community;
  • Liaison with the University in improving the Mosque facilities; and
  • Act as a bridge between the Muslim community and the rest of the society.
      Members of UMMA
Membership of the UMMA restricted to the following:
  1. UNE Muslim staff,
  2. UNE Muslim students, and
  3. The general Muslim community.

At UNE, UMMA members have facilities that are normally needed to perform their religious rights and duties. The following information will be more helpful to know about the activities.

Location of the Mosque: Opposite to Security Office at the main enterance to the UNE campus  (See the map)

    Accessing the Mosque: You can access the mosque any time, But you will need to sign in to borrow a key from Security Office. Friday prayers normally begins at 1:15 pm and finishes at 2 pm. Halal food: Halal food stuff (beef, lambs, chicken and others) is available during the following time:
    Friday 1:00 - 2:15 PM and  Sunday  11:00 AM - 2:00 PM
    Arabic and Qura'n School: teaching Arabic and Qura'n courses are held on Sundays for children.
    But anybody interested can join them.

    Mosque Renovation: The UNE Mosque is located on the Booloominbah Drive beside the deer park, opposite to the UNE Security office. Although, the facilities currently available in the Mosque building is just enough for prayers, it needs extension for other activities such as social gatherings during various religious occasions, providing Halal food etc. The planned extension done in collaboration with concerned UNE staff envisages extended Prayer Halls, better facilities for ablution and better storage and supply facilities for Halal food. The University (notably the Vice Chancellor Professor Ingrid Moses) has kindly consented to provide a part of the costs of extension of the Mosque; however, we have to collect the major portion to match UNE’s contribution.

    The Muslim community in New England region, rest of Australia and if possible from other countries are requested o make donations for UNE Mosque Renovation. Contributions for the UNE Mosque Renovation Project should be sent directly to UNE using a Donation form, which can be downloaded and the donation deposited to UNE finance office.
