Any other business:

There was some discussion on the state of Malaysian/Singaporean research and scholarship. It was suggested that there seems to be more focus on Indonesian studies than Malaysian/Singaporean studies at present.  It was suggested that this probably reflects the availability of funding for Indonesian studies over Malaysian studies. Amarjit Kaur proposed that MASSA colloquia be more ‘regional’ in focus with Malaysia and Singapore at the core.

15th Malaysia & Singapore Society Colloquium, 2008: Professor Amarjit Kaur raised this and asked for suggestions and volunteers to organise.  After some discussion, Lily Rahim and John Funston agreed to organise and convene the 15th Colloquium in Canberra. This will probably include themes like Islam & security Issues in the SEA region.
