Minutes of General Business Meeting 2004

Meeting held at 4.45 pm on 26 November 2004, Tea Room, Faculty of Asian Studies, ANU, Canberra

1. Society Name Change Postal Ballot

The president announced the result of the Society Name Change Postal Ballot. Total votes cast were 21 - 20 Yes votes and 1 No vote. The ballot was carried by a 95.23% majority. Details of votes and voting papers are held by the Secretary/Treasurer. The society will henceforth be known as the “Malaysia and Singapore Society of Australia” (from 2005).

2. Election of Society Executive Board Members for 2005-2006

New Board members elected at the meeting for 2005-2006 are:

Retired academics: John Drabble
NSW: Clive Kessler
Queensland: Brian Ridge
ACT: Christine Campbell
Victoria: Rita Camilleri
Singapore: Lily Rahim
Student Representatives: Mark Emmanuel and Mary Kilcline-Cody
New Zealand Representative: Ungku Maimunah Mohd Tahir
USA Representative: Bridget Welsh

A vacancy exists for a representative from Malaysia. Please send an expression of interest to the Secretary/Treasurer Ian Metcalfe at imetcalf@pobox.une.edu.au


3. Launch and distribution of Clive Kessler’s James C. Jackson Lecture Publication


Virginia Hooker launched Clive Kessler’s James C Jackson lecture 2004 publication and copies were distributed to all members present. Copies to all other non-attending members would be mailed.

4. 4. Any other business


Virginia Hooker proposed and Clive Kessler seconded that Amarjit Kaur be invited to deliver the next James C. Jackson Memorial lecture at the 2006 meeting of the ASSA. This was unanimously supported by the members present.

Amarjit Kaur and Ian Metcalfe agreed to convene the 14th Malaysia Society Colloquium at the University of New England, Armidale, in 2006. (The last weekend in November). The tentative theme is Globalisation, Security and Surveillance in Malaysia and Singapore.

The meeting thanked the convenor Lily Rahim and members of the organising committee , Virginia Hooker, Amarjit Kaur and Ian Metcalfe for organising a very successful 13th Malaysia Society Colloquium.

Members then adjourned to the ‘Flavour of India Restaurant’ for the colloquium dinner.
