About the Malaysia and Singapore Society
MALAYSIA AND SINGAPORE SOCIETY OF AUSTRALIA
The Malaysia and Singapore Society of Australia was formed more than 22 years ago. It is a chapter of the Asian Studies Association of Australia.
Objective
It aims to bring together scholars from all disciplines who share a common interest in Malaysia. This is done through two main forums:
1. The Malaysia and Singapore Society biennial colloquium (usually held in Australia but held in Penang in conjunction with the Malaysian Social Science Association in 1987).
2. The James C. Jackson Memorial Lecture held at the biennial ASAA Conference.
[The James C. Jackson Memorial Lecture was instituted in August 1979 to ensure that the late Professor JacksonŐs contributions to the field of Malaysian Studies be commemorated in an appropriate way. Professor Jackson was Professor of Modern Asian Studies at Griffith University. An eminent scholar delivers the Memorial Lecture].
Since 1998, the Malaysia and Singapore Society has collaborated with the informal Australia-Malaysia Group at the ANU (headed by Colin Barlow) and assisted with the Australia-Malaysia Conference, convened by the latter on a biennial basis. Both these meetings are held consecutively. The first was held in 1997. The second Australia - Malaysia Conference was scheduled to follow the Malaysia Society Colloquium in November 1999. Unfortunately, the Malaysian general elections were scheduled at about the same time and consequently, the Second Australia-Malaysia Conference was held in May 2000.
