Research interests: In collaboration with Professor Lim Ah Lan of the University of Malaya, I am studying aspects of wood anatomy and embryology - development of anther and pollen; formation of male and female gametes; fertilisation; growth of the embryo and the nutritive tissue; seed and fruit structure - in a range of vascular plants including species of legumes, orchids, grasses, mangrove plants and citrus from Malaysia. Although the work is mainly phylogenetic and laboratory based, we do make extensive field observations and try, where relevant, to solve problems in plant reproduction such as sterility and other constraints to the breeding of cultivated plants.
