W G Hoddinott Sound and Print Collection

Background

W G Hoddinott, who died in 1984, was Associate Professor in the English Department of the University of New England, Armidale, NSW. Soon after his appointment to the University in 1960 he began recording Aboriginal languages still known to the old people of Armidale and the NSW North Coast. His research later extended to the languages of the Daly and Victoria Rivers regions of the NT where he was assisted by J Cleverly, J Bolt and F Kofod. A guide and summary of tapes was compiled by F Kofod.

The Hoddinott Collection consists of journal articles, sound recordings and field notes on Australian Aboriginal languages, written and recorded by W G Hoddinott and his associate researchers during 1965–1984. Our collection is duplicated in the collection held at the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Studies in Canberra.

Photocopies of books (Top Drawer)

This is a list of photocopies or otherwise of historic books and articles, to do with the study of Aboriginal Languages. Most of these are rare books. Associate Professor Hoddinott collected the copies as originals and they are not available for purchase.

Daly River, Djamindjungan & Kimberley languages (Second Drawer)

This drawer contains Daly River Papers such as field notes, verb files, notebooks, vocabulary lists and word lists. It also holds material relating to the Djamindjungan languge and transcriptions of some Kimberley languages tapes.

Audio recordings (Third Drawer) 

This drawer holds a summary of audio recordings in the W G Hoddinott Collection.

North Coast & New England Area (Fourth Drawer)

This drawer holds materials relating to North Coast and New England Area such as transcripts, field notes, verb files, notebooks, vocabulary lists and word lists.

Access to the Collection

The Collection is located in the New England Collection Room, on the Ground Floor of the Dixson Library. Access to the Collection is through the Library's Service Desk during library hours whereby the materials will be retrieved and made available for consultation in the Library. 

Researchers may request retrieval of individual items from the above collections in advance using the Special Collection Retrieval form. Items requested by 2.00 PM are available for use at the Service Desk by 3.00 PM on the same day, including weekends and Public Holidays.
