Meeting teaching support standards
What you can do
To help us meet the University Library’s standards for teaching support, please ensure that:- Prescribed books are in print and are available for purchase by students before the beginning of the relevant semester.
- One copy of the current edition of each prescribed text is either already in the Library collection or has been ordered in time to ensure that it will be available for loan at the commencement of teaching.
- Items described as recommended or further reading in your unit teaching materials are held in the University Library. An accurate call number is provided for all library materials to which reference is made in your unit teaching material.
- A complete bibliography (with call numbers) is included at the teaching materials. Please include the following note (or words to the same effect): All books and articles to which reference is made are available from Off Campus Services, Dixson Library. Please quote the CALL NUMBER given in the bibliography at the back of this booklet when making a loan request. By encouraging students to quote item call numbers, you will greatly assist library staff in providing a rapid, efficient service.
- The University Library holds at least one copy of all prescribed texts and recommended material.
- Unit teaching materials are reviewed every three years to check usage patterns with the numbers of copies held.
- Where possible, students are referred to an individual book chapter, rather than the entire text. This makes it possible to meet the demand from external students through the despatch of a copy of a single chapter. Remember that copyright law prevents duplication of more than a single chapter of any one text. If you need students to read more than one chapter in the same book, you will need to ensure that sufficient copies are available for loan. In addition, you will need to ensure that either a copy of the relevant chapter or the entire book has been deposited in the Open Reserve.
- Frequently used journal articles are included in teaching material as readings. If this is not possible, a clean photocopy of each article referred to in the unit teaching materials should be lodged with eReserve staff, who can provide you with a durable link to include in printed or online unit materials.
What we can do?
Staff at the University Library can advise you regarding Reserve procedures and item purchases (advice in these matters can also be sought from your School Library Liaison Officer).
In addition, library staff can help you by providing (or checking) item call numbers when you are designing a new or revised unit.
Please note that some time is required to perform this task. Allow the Library one month in your schedule prior to the production of the final draft. It will be easier to meet this target if you follow the recommended practice of including a complete bibliography in the back of the teaching material.
